    The house is constructed primarily with bricks, undressed stone, timber, reinforced concrete and terracotta tiles. The stone walls at the piedistallo of the house on the eastern side provide a deeper relief for the windows whereas the freestanding stone wall running parallel to the timber ramp on the south side creates a sense of security and solid-. The tree trunks, used as columns for the serambi veranda Applicare, and timber strip flooring are set against the backdrop of stone and smooth plastered brickwall.

    As the spaces flow, the materials also change — creating different moods in response to the play of the sun. The whims and curiosities of the lifestyle of its billionaires are also sufficiently well-known, as are the enormous number of RollsRoyces and Ferraris, and the inhuman storage spaces for those millions which the phenomenon of Hong Kong has made possible with the work it provides.

    But what is Hong Kong really? What can this global city really tell us? Hong Kong has its skyscrapers and skyline like other global cities. The urban culture of Hong Kong is fascinating. The masses are kept in motion by a complex and highly developed transport network, and the city is experienced as a three-dimensional matrix. The local Chinese traders, and above them and alongside them the high life of the international designer stores. A unique EuropeanAmerican-Asian mixture of urban culture.

    Hong Kong arose from the gracile dependence of limited land resources and tides of major population expansion. Quantifiable factors have been regulated — questions of minimum sanitary requirements, average living-space su person. Housing management, in other words, in the classic modern Bauhaus functionalist tradition. Even so, most of the skyscrapers are no more than average.

    Why then is a collection of largely banal buildings so fascinating? It is their dense multitude. In unimaginably small cubicles, architecture is produced as quickly and efficiently as a virus. Architecture for EDGE architects is above all an opportunity to influence sociospatial processes, architecturally they thematize the situation of Hong Kong itself.

    The background of a critical discourse also allows architects like Anthony Ng to strike out along new paths. Under the paradigms of High-Rise and High-Density.     HighDensity and High-Rise are the main themes being studied and developed here, and, in these conditions, how a three-dimensional, public urban space of movement can be created. Hong Kong architecture today is the avantgarde of the city of the future. Multicultural life full of social contradictions in extreme density. This question must be answered by architecture. Because more and more people are going to be living in cities in these conditions.

By comparison, they are all jumbles of bits and pieces, where systems have devoured architecture; they are eternal demolition sites and stopgap projects. Those who until July 6 had been accustomed to land at the old Kai Tak airport were privileged to feel they were already in the heart of Hong Kong before actually getting there.

    Those were the days when washing-lines flapped close to the wingtips of jets, and the characteristically tropical sour smell of rot wafted into the terminal. The airport was in the city, and the difference between inside and outside was almost nil; it was like arriving by train, with passengers plunged straight into the hyperdensity and round-the-clock congestion of Hong Kong. It is sunny, unlimited, clean, unobstructed and calm, and the ceilings are high. The new runways, the terminals and the buildings annexed to Chek Lap Kok which means goldfish rest on what were previously three islands.

    It is amazing how cleverly Foster manages in the forms of his architecture to represent the links in his view indissoluble between times, production systems and functional schedules — without however letting himself be swayed by trite construction systems or practical engineering. Those who compare Foster to an engineer fail to grasp the superior quality that he adds to plain technology.

    Foster knows how to represent the organizational machine at the close of the twentieth century, as Paxton did with the Crystal Palace. As we walk the thousand metres and more that divide the entrance wall from the embarkation gates, we perceive the erasure of all the intermediate scales of architecture: switching directly from the scale of the infinitely large to that of the infinitely small. Foster and the Mott Consortium have reduced to a minimum the compositional elements of the airport, which was not designed in the traditional sense, but organized and programmed.

    Compared to Stansted, aside from the larger scale, it is easy to notice that here all the elements of design have been abandoned in favour of the overall perfection of the outer shell. The risk was that of producing a general sense of anonymity. The intelligent totems supporting the umbrella roof at Stansted have given way to round pillars, that seem to vanish into an inner volume so vast that the eye is lost in it. As at Stansted, here too the roof catalyses our curiosity, especially if we are in the departure hall or in the long embarkation fingers.

    The roofing, comprising a series of barrel arches leading towards the gates, is conceived as a perspective that channels us in the right direction. Towards their sides the arches get lower, though without being flattened. The top of each section incorporates a skylight composed of triangles which continue the pattern set by the structural ribs of the crossed arches below; screening the light and reflecting onto the intrados of the roof.

    The geometry must have been complicated to design, but it is easy to perceive and conjures up the magic of making us feel we were inside a vast lighting fixture. The illusion is that the light does not originate from a given point and then spread, but resides in space while occupying it, much as the sound of an orchestra occupies an auditorium while bouncing off different surfaces.

    The shape of the roof screen causes a special gravitational sensation to reverberate in the air, almost as if we were in a pressurised interior capable of inflating its surroundings. In a place acting so directly on our senses, it is difficult to grasp distances. This is his image of an ideal and perfect world. We ordinary mortals may perhaps not deserve it, but it does allow us to dream. And one of its great merits is that it never slips into authoritarianism. For Foster, computers and technology are parts of this imaginary world.

    Analysts such as Francesco Orioli examined in detail the grammatical structures of epigraphs much as one might analyse a poem or novel. Indeed, in Sensibile, Morichini, referred to inscriptions as 'questo nascente tipo su letterature' and described their emergence as a 'novello fiore della romanzi italiana', the new flower of Italian literature. The culture which inspired Italian inscriptions in the nineteenth century was very much in concord with the ideas voiced by Foscolo in Dei Sepolcri which emphasised the human and natural instinct to remember.

    Inscriptions were felt to be inspired by this love and they offered the possibility of keeping the dead alive both in the mind and in the heart.

    Writers continually mention the loving bond between those who have died and those who are attempting to perpetuate their memory. It has been said that ritual remembrance is a form of intergenerational storytelling; 14 it is my opinion that inscriptions were an attempt to promote this form of remembrance. The dialogue between the living and the dead could take place in this curious literary form comprising of words carved on stone.

    Italians understood the difficulty of preserving memory, but they were determined to defy this reality by all means possible. As Gaetano Sorgato wrote:. Eulogies Inscriptions and funeral orations have much in common and indeed, the lines between the oral and the written were often blurred in the two forms. Epigraphs, which were intended to be inscribed, were often read during the funeral ceremony; and orations, which were supposed to be spoken, were often published.

    Eulogies were primarily an oral form, however, and they introduced the element of ritual performance to the funeral ceremony. The lament for the dead, the praise for his or her achievements and the desire for emulation and edification became commonplace graveside sentiments in this century which witnessed the rising popularity of funeral orations.

    Like inscriptions, orations were intended to praise virtue and to nurture the memory of the deceased and to fight oblivion. They were also an attempt to fight oblivion; in the preface to a collection of eulogies, it was said:.

    All of these books promoted the cult of the hero, the process of remembrance and the honouring of the great. Although a large proportion of the compositions were written on the occasion of the death of an illustrious figure, there were also many eulogies which dealt with long-dead figures.

    The novelty in the collections rests, however, with the amount of orations written for the purpose of commemoration, inspiration and remembrance. There was an unprecedented effort at remembering figures of the past, both those long deceased and those recently buried.

    Many writers of inscriptions also composed orations; Pietro Giordani, for example, famous for his epigraphs, was also in much demand for eulogies. One of the principal composers of funeral orations in this periodo was the Tuscan Francesco Domenico Guerrazzi, who was prominent in the movement to promote eulogies and to use them constructively in a didactic function. Oblivion — second death — the death of the soul, cannot be vanquished with marble monuments, or with obelisks, or with pyramids.

    Francesco Domenico Guerrazzi. Eulogies were therefore a popular form of nineteenth-century remembrance which focused on the illustrious in order to promote civic virtues. They did not undergo the radical change experienced by inscriptions but they still experienced widespread popularity and contributed significantly to the promotion of exemplary citizens and the cult of hero worship. Orations differed from inscriptions as they gave more possibility for shared social interaction.

    Listening to eulogies formed part of the communal participation in mourning the dead. It emphasised the importance of the dead within the overall framework of society and the continuing presence of the deceased in the life of the living. Monuments If inscriptions supplied written stimulus and orations aural, then monuments were the visual stimulus in the remembrance of the dead.

    All three elements worked together as epigraphs were inscribed on monuments and orations were read at the graveside. The same motivation which led to an increase in inscriptions and orations prompted an expansion in monumental culture and the widespread erection of funerary monuments.

    Debates were aired on the form and function of monuments and those involved in commemoration were anxious to prove the worthiness and suitability of the person honoured. The negotiation involved in the erection of monuments demonstrates the levels of debate in the process and the interest of the nineteenth century in suitably honouring the dead. The successful passage from death to remembrance was not, however, guaranteed for all. The living are the custodians of memory and their reaction to monuments decides their success or failure.

    In order to promote memory, monuments needed to be placed in locations which would emphasise their importance; they also needed to trigger a reaction amongst viewers and contain some emotional charge. Many failed. The object, the site and the ritual surrounding the monument had to interact meaningfully in order to promote memory. If the site lacked emotional impact then it would fail in its function of conserving memory. In the nineteenth century, there was a desire to put emotion back into monuments, to create those sites laden with significance as imagined by Foscolo.

    To take but one example, figures on funerary monuments often pointed towards the representation of the deceased, drawing attention to the person honoured in the monument. The power of a site was also increased by the fact that it offered a place of physical reference.

    One cannot underestimate the emotional power of the site of the remains of the dead and it was in this evo that people started to frequent cemeteries on a regular basis and to leave flowers on the tombs of the deceased.

    The resting place of the dead was individualised with crosses and with monuments, and it became a point of focus for grief. The physical site of burial, emphasised by monuments, was thus a special location where one could tap into the emotion and the power of death. The impetus for monuments in this evo can be seen in the public interest in high profile memorials such as that of Dante in Santa Tribolazione, Tasso in Rome and Canova in Venice.

    A manifesto published to support a monument to Dante in Florence, mentions the momentum behind commemoration in these years; it spoke of:. Using either the emotional power of the graveyard or the human figure of a statue, they harnessed memories of the past to communicate the importance of the dead in the lives of the preent.

    Speaking on the importance of monumental commemoration, Pietro Giordani said that funerary sculptures should honour the special qualities and virtues of the deceased, communicate moral concepts and teach the populace.

    He continued:. There were a variety of publications which welcomed and encouraged the interest in funerary monuments, and exemplary of these was the volume published in entitled, Monumenti sepolcrali della Toscana. The interest in tombs can thus be seen to be not simply a quirky, marginal fascination, but rather something which appealed to large sections of educated society in the nineteenth century.

    The book on Tuscan sepulchral monuments was envisioned by its creators as a complementary feature to the tombs. Similarly, poets who wrote on tombs saw their work as a uniting force between the art of words, and the art of sculpture and remembrance.

    Angelo Mocchetti in his long poem 'Dei monumenti' certainly saw his poetry in his light as his composiiton used monuments as the starting point for thoughts on remembrance, greatness and achievement.

    In his introduction to a book on Roman tombs, Oreste Raggi said:. My poetry is not intended merely to comodità the graves of the Deceased. I take the word monument to mean all the good memories that one can transmit to the younger generations and so I have addressed some words of rebuke to those who do not care for honourable things and praise for those who have the will and the power to erect useful Monuments.

    Angelo Mocchetti. Conclusion While people in nineteenth century Italy were mourning the dead, they were also simultaneously defining the dead. They were defining the role that the dead would play in their society. They localised death and made it a meaningful contribution in their own lives. Italy, a country steeped in Latin heritage, where orations and inscriptions were valued, opted for a new form of remembrance which would use the Italian language, would emphasise Italian heroes and would create new monuments for the landscape.

    Rituals, tombs, artistic and physical settings, inscriptions and orations orchestrated the remembrance of death. They manipulated time and provoked memory: if orations, inscriptions and monuments were successful, then, past, present and future could unite as one. A dialogue with death was maintained through these efforts. The messages contained in the funerary apparatus of the nineteenth century were designed to appeal to as many people as possible.

    This can be seen in its starkest form in the change in inscriptions from Latin to Italian, but is also evident in the increase in orations and the wider distribution of monuments. Throughout the nineteenth century there were prizes and competitions for designs of tombs and cemeteries, and the death mask and deathbed portrait became popular artistic endeavours.

    Journals carried discussions on the suitability of various forms of burial and burial sites and there were wide-ranging debates on issues of mortality, disposal of corpses, appropriate ceremony and dignified commemoration. Inscriptions, eulogies and monuments were just three elements of this much wider encounter with death. Examining the modes of remembrance of any given society gives us a greater parere of how that community functions and, as David Cannadine has commented, the history of death is at least as complicated as the history of life.

The masses are kept in motion by a complex and highly developed transport network, and the city is experienced as a three-dimensional matrix. The local Chinese traders, and above them and alongside them the high life of the international designer stores.

The top of each section incorporates a skylight composed of triangles which continue the pattern set by the structural ribs of the crossed arches below; screening the light and reflecting onto the intrados of the roof. The geometry must have been complicated to design, but it is easy to perceive and conjures up the magic of making us feel we were inside a vast lighting fixture.

    The illusion is that the light does not originate from a given point and then spread, but resides in space while occupying it, much as the sound of an orchestra occupies an auditorium while bouncing off different surfaces.
